Klein McCarthy Architects was hired to design the addition and remodel of the existing Winona County Office building producing a combined home for Community Health, Human Services and Veteran's Services Departments. Primary design concerns were addressing public circulation and access and providing secured staff areas.
In addition to adding program space and addressing public access issues, a major goal of the county was to incorporate progressive Sustainable Design features following LEED guidelines. The design team extensively researched strategies to integrate existing building systems with new more efficient systems while improving efficiency of the overall physical plant. Daylighting, highly integrated HVAC and lighting systems and increased efficiency of the building envelope were some of the design elements utilized.
With a highly urban site in a prominent downtown location, the design team made a responsive design solution a high priority. The alignment of the entry points helps improve public access and also reinforces the relationship between this building and the Courthouse to the Southeast. Thoughtful interior design helped modernize the overall spaces and address code issues while retaining much of the existing infrastructure.
