With a goal of providing enhanced security to meet federal guidelines, the State of North Dakota hired Klein McCarthy Architects to master plan the enhancements to the site and determine strategies to meet the Capitol complex’s long term parking and grounds goals.
Working together with landscape architect Damon Farber and Associates, Klein McCarthy developed a long term master plan to be implemented in multiple phases that create new ceremonial approaches, a security plaza. The designs also enhanced the grounds of the complex and included hundreds of new parking spots, and an expanded loading dock for better deliveries and service access. The project provided Capitol staff with a set of standards in a classic yet modern vernacular that can be applied to future exterior improvements to the capitol grounds. Phase I of the project was built in 2013, Phase II of the project has been awarded and will begin construction Spring 2014.
