Built in 1875, the existing Houston County Jail is the oldest jail in Minnesota still in operation. In the 135 years since this building was built inmate population
has increased, security technology and Department of Corrections regulations have changed. In response to current needs and technology the County hired Klein McCarthy Architects to
assist with the master planning, programming, design and construction administration of a new jail facility.
The new jail will be built within the original 1850 courthouse square adjacent to other county departments in downtown Caledonia.
The jail will consist of 6 housing units, totaling 83 beds. Centralized podular design with direct sight lines from central control will provide
the required separation for inmate classification and good supervision control. Central control / dispatch is located to provide service
directly to the public lobby.
The housing and booking cells will be constructed with steel cell modular construction. The steel cells are delivered to the site preassembled which
helps to reduce construction time. The 12 gauge steel cells are finished with a polyurea coating that is durable and chemical resistant. The modular
construction method provides efficiency of design and construction savings.
