The current Houston County Jail was built in 1875 and is the oldest operating jail in the state of Minnesota. The Jail is adjacent to the historic
courthouse which was built in 1883. The courthouse and jail form a courthouse square that was part of the City of Caledonia’s original 19th century master plan. The
location of the new Justice Center and parking reinforce the concept of the original courthouse square. The exterior design and materials reflects the classical proportions
and relationships of the existing buildings.
The new facility will address the lack of adequate parking to the government campus. Landscape planters and screening were added to maintain the open green plaza space in
the center of the campus. The new Justice Facility provides space for:
- Law Enforcement
- County Jail (82 bed facility)
- Evidence Processing & Storage
- County Attorney
- Court Administration
- District Court Courtrooms and Support Space
- Probation Services
