Houston County Justice Center
CALEDONIA, MN

Home : Projects : Courts : Houston County Justice Center

The historic Houston County Courthouse was built in 1885. The building has a classical design that defines the courthouse square and is an excellent example of the town square concept of city planning. The new courthouse will be located directly adjacent to the historic courthouse and will respect the historic proportions and materials and reinforce the courthouse campus and surrounding neighborhood. The new Courthouse will house all justice services (Court Services, Jail, County Attorney, Sheriff's Office and Probation) into one facility that provides convenience to the citizens and operational efficiency for the County departments.

The facility has 1 jury courtroom and a hearing room. Support space includes judge's chambers, a jury deliberation area and court administration. The location of 2 courtrooms was planned with an inmate holding area and elevator between them to provide secure inmate movement from the jail to the courtrooms.

The design team is utilizing energy efficiency and sustainable design approaches in the design of the facility such as natural lighting, low VOC's, recycled content, energy-efficient lighting and controls, and the use of local materials.
