The 87 bed Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center was opened in 1984 and, despite the concerted use of diversion
programs and alternatives to incarceration, soon suffered from chronic overcrowding. This project alleviated the overcrowding by adding
two floors (four housing tiers) to the existing Juvenile Detention Center, with housing for 60 additional juveniles and a total
capacity of 147 beds.
The new 4th floor includes three 12 bed housing modules for a total of 36 secure detention beds for both young men
and women. These beds will utilize classroom, recreation, and other support facilities on the lower floors of the existing JDC. The
new 5th floor has two 12 bed housing modules, one for a long term treatment program (greater than 90 days) and one for a short term
secure program (less than 90 days). These 24 treatment beds include classrooms and other program and support space.
The total addition came to 34,396 gross square feet, including extending existing mechanical, electrical, and elevator
systems to serve the new space.
