Klein McCarthy Mourns the Death of Our Founder
St. Louis Park, MinnesotaJune 2010
It is with great sadness that we announce George F. Klein, Jr., founder of Klein McCarthy & Co., Ltd., Architects, died
peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2010. George lived a long, full and varied life that lead him from Minneapolis to Canada and back again.
Born in Minneapolis in 1923 George moved with his family to Winnipeg, Ontario, Canada, where his father managed the Hudson Bay Company store. He graduated from
the University of Minnesota with a degree in Architecture and settled in Minneapolis to raise his family. He was a pilot in the Naval Reserves for 25 years and retired
as a four star Commander. His work as an architect with Hammel, Green & Abrahamson, Inc., Parker Klein & Associates, George Klein & Co., and later Klein
McCarthy & Co., Ltd., covered the five-state area.
George started George Klein & Co. Ltd. on July 1, 1977, with his wife Helen and Richard McCarthy. Among the firm's earliest projects were the Hennepin County
Work Release Facility in Plymouth, the Ramsey County Juvenile Center in St. Paul (the firm's first commission), and work for Pillsbury and Metroquip. Rich
partnered into the firm in 1985 and it became Klein McCarthy & Co., Ltd., Architects at that time.
An avid golfer, tennis player and boating enthusiast, George loved the Lake Minnetonka area and was an active member of the community for nearly 50 years. George is
survived by four daughters and their families... and a multitude of former co-workers, employees and friends.
